Viking Age pendant bronze "Raven"
Â
For centuries, the raven has been part of legends and fairy tales. The ravens Hugin and Munin were two faithful companions of Odin, the god of wisdom. Every morning they flew out to observe the world before returning at nightfall with new news for their master. The idea of Hugin represents thinking and intelligence, while Mugin symbolizes memories and omniscience.
This pendant with a pictorial representation of a raven was artfully crafted from an ancient model from the Viking Age, originally used as a clasp for puttees. The original Viking-era pendant was inspired by a historical artifact from Yaroslav, which dates back to the 10th century. An almost identical raven motif was also found on Gotland.
