Pilgrimage sign scallop made of pewter

Already in earlier times, Christians visited special places, such as the tomb of Jesus or the tombs of the apostles, to pray at these burial sites. These sites were mostly located in the Holy Land or in Rome and can be considered as the first places of pilgrimage. Towards the end of the early Middle Ages, pilgrimage then expanded intensively, and in particular from 900 AD onwards there was a flurry of pilgrimage to the tomb of St. James in Santiago de Compostela. From the 11th century, additional pilgrimage sites were added in Central Europe. Pilgrims felt the need to take with them a memento of their pilgrimage. On the one hand, as an expression of their piety (belief in God and acting accordingly), and on the other hand, as proof that they were actually at the holy site.

This pewter badge is modeled on the scallop shell. On the front there is an image of St. James in the center and the back is not smooth, but also in the shape of a shell. Pilgrim signs were worn on the hat or clothing during the pilgrimage. So here a small eyelet was included to be able to sew on the scallop Shell.
